PostHeaderIcon How To Coach The “Inside Stuff”

Almost every single issue we deal with today is a character issue-good or bad. In today’s world we hire people for skills and then fire them because of character. The same can be said of sports. Today, talent is not enough because skill without character just develops mediocrity. Combining character and skill develop excellence. It’s time to focus on the intangibles, the “inside stuff,” which makes the difference in our players’ performance, and in their lives.

Most coaches know the importance of character but long for a game plan and practical set tools to develop it within their players. Character comes from a Greek word meaning “to scratch or engrave”; “the qualities or features that comprise and distinguish an individual.” Remember, a sport doesn’t develop character, a coach develops character. This season is an incredible opportunity to “scratch and engrave” into your players the character qualities needed to improve attitude, performance and heart.

This week, take action and think of two character qualities or CQs’ like perseverance and optimism that you would want your players to demonstrate on and off the field or court. Look up, write down and take these definitions with you to practice. Initiate your practice by explaining each CQ and its definition. Explain to your players where the game demands them to demonstrate that CQ. Then recognize it, respond to it and reward it. Take the opportunity to also educate them on how to find situations outside of sports to apply these same character qualities to personal and family life scenarios.

Behind every skill we teach, there are character qualities that can be developed to improve the performance we are looking for. Recognize and match character qualities to athletic abilities. Help your athletes understand how to best apply them both to sporting events and personal life situations.

There is a high school coach who started to focus on the “Inside Stuff” and incorporate character into his coaching curriculum. The following season, his team went undefeated and advanced deep into the playoffs but fell one game short of the State Championship game. At the banquet a very thankful parent stood up and said to the coaching staff, “We gave you 48 boys and you returned 48 young men.” The Coaches realized that they were responsible for transforming lives through sports. This coach and his staff realized significance of coaching the “Inside Stuff.

Attention Lacrosse Players! Is lacrosse a good sport for me?

I haven’t really played on a team sport outside of gym class before, (only baseball when i was 12 – which i didn’t like)

Any ideas.

Yes or No and Why! What exact equipment is needed. and any tips on brands or tips on what things to look for?

Also, I’m male, and sadly only 5′8″ and 125 pounds.. but I’m fast. What position do you think would be best? Mid Field?oh and it would be indoor (BOX) house-league. What equipment should i get?

Thank you!
I just turned 17

Helmet / Face shield, shoulder pads, forearm / elbow pads, gloves, cup, rib pads and/or lightweight hip pads, shinguards (soccer ones are good because they won’t interfere with your running) are optional but recommend.

Also try and put on a few pounds, and keep your head up. From my own experience box lacrosse is like a mix of hockey and football with a little soccer + tennis mixed in.
Definately has more of an emphesis on speed than does the outdoor game.

For gear you really have to try it on to know .. personally I like STX and Brine, but a lot of pro lacrosse players use Warrior.

Do Little League coaches get paid? Does anyone know a good search site for youth baseball coaching positions?

Hi, I am just wondering if Little League coaches get paid? If so, how much? If not, at what level do coaches start getting paid? I am in college at Indiana University, and I have an internship for the summer already, but I love baseball so much that I thought coaching in my little spare time this summer would be a blast. Just looking for some answers. Thanks for any feedback.

I’ve never heard of Little League Coaches getting paid, my husband did not when he coached. That is a volunteer job, maybe you could maybe get a summer job as a referee for some ball teams.
